UPCOMING CHRISTMAS CRAFT FAIR/SPACE BOOKING
It gives us great pleasure to announce to you the upcoming Christmas Craft Fair, to be held at Ocean Sports Resort, Watamu on the 16^th December 2012. For the convenience of everybody the timings have been fixed from 10:00am to 5:00pm.
The Craft Fair aims to provide an opportunity for everybody who is interested in buying clothes, shoes, art, textiles and other luxury items. We would like our guests and vendors to have an opportunity to interact with one another in this celebratory environment. We urge interested parties to confirm their participation in the Craft Fair before the 30^th October 2012.

HANDCRAFT

Producing and selling handicraft articles are one of the key sub-chains in tourism, when it comes to the question of where and how poor people can benefit from tourism. In fact, handicraft production and sales to tourists are one of the main pro-poor income earners of the tourism sector in developing countries.
Poor people in developing countries often lack resources, skills and employment, which keeps them from reaching a family income above the poverty line. They have limited access to education and mostly rely on subsistence farming in rural areas or poorly-paid occasional jobs in urban centres. Handicraft production, based on traditional skills and with low investment requirements, is one of the few possibilities which poor people have to help them increase their income.
Handicraft production is an important area of job creation in the informal sector. Subsistence farmers gain additional income from household-related handicraft production and for the urban poor, the production of handicrafts is an alternative in an environment where employment opportunities are few.

RECYCLED ART

With the support of UNESCO's International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD), Cape Town's Harlequin Foundation, an NGO that promotes youth development and environmental awareness, trains women, single parents and disabled adults from disadvantaged communities in recycled arts and helps them build micro-enterprises and secure jobs around festivals and carnivals in South Africa. Trainees are encouraged to share their skills and resources with their communities to open up further channels for development and cohesion. Members from these marginalized communities suddenly find themselves with relatively rare and very sought-after skills in creating large art pieces, including floats, puppets and costumes from recycled material, for festivals and carnivals. These skills, combined with mentorship and training around micro-enterprise establishment and management, are empowering these individuals to create jobs for themselves and others and renew their links with their communities to lift themselves out of poverty and violent or abusive conditions.
